- On May 19th, American Water signed an agreement to purchase Nexus Water Group’s water and wastewater utilities in eight states including Maryland Water Service, Inc. in Maryland.
- The estimated closing will take place by or before August 2026, following regulatory approval by all required state public service commissions and other governmental entities.
- Maryland American Water’s request for approval of the acquisition of Maryland Water Service was filed with the Maryland Public Service Commission on May 30. During the regulatory approval process, Maryland Water Service will continue to operate the local systems.
- Over the coming months, we will develop a plan to help support a seamless transition for Maryland Water Service’s customers throughout the duration of the transaction, and beyond.
- Maryland American Water is committed to offering employment to employees of Maryland Water Service.
- The Maryland Water Service systems included in the acquisition are in Harford, Allegany and Anne Arundel County:
- Harford County – 950 connections: Green Ridge/Green Ridge-Vista and Lakeside Vista
- Allegany County – 1050 connections: Highland Estates* and Pinto* (*water purchased from Allegany County)
- Anne Arundel County – 1550 connections: Provinces
- Upon Maryland Public Service Commission approval of the acquisition and closing of the transaction, Maryland American Water will adopt the current Maryland Water Service rates for all customers of Maryland Water Service. There will be no change in any Maryland Water Service customer rates at the time of closing.
- Any change in rates would occur via a future rate change request which would need to be reviewed and approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission. This would not occur until after the acquisition closing date.
- Until Maryland American Water becomes the owner of these systems, any customer questions, issues or complaints should be directed to Maryland Water Service as the current owner/operator of the systems. Maryland Water Service can be reached at (844) 310-6660.
- As the closing date approaches, Maryland American Water will be communicating with customers to provide information about the transition of their service and related accounts to Maryland American Water. This information will include how customers can manage their account online, contact customer service and more.
