Kentucky American Water President Addresses ASCE Report Card, Urges More Investment in Critical Water Infrastructure

Rob Burton, president of Kentucky American Water, issued the following statement in response to the grades of C- for water and D+ for wastewater in the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) 2025 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure.

“The ASCE 2025 Report Card reveals no change or improvement in the last four years – America's drinking water and wastewater infrastructure overall is stagnant. The Report Card highlights the urgent need for significant investment in water and wastewater infrastructure, not just across the nation, but also here in Kentucky,” Burton said. “Our state continues to face challenges when it comes to investing in critical infrastructure, particularly in these sectors.

“As a water industry leader, Kentucky American Water remains committed to renewing the water and wastewater infrastructure that we are responsible for, but certainly more work is needed over the next several decades to upgrade the infrastructure installed by the generations before us,” he added.

“We also believe that we are in a unique position to be a solution for communities that struggle to invest in their infrastructure at the levels needed to provide quality water and wastewater services,” Burton said.  “Kentucky American Water invested approximately $83 million in system upgrades in 2024 alone. These upgrades included the replacement of aging water mains, valves, fire hydrants, meters and service lines as well as improvements at facilities that treat water and wastewater. Simply put, water infrastructure investments provide their value every day through the quality of life they bring to customers.”

With over a trillion dollars in infrastructure investments needed in water and wastewater across the country over the next two decades, American Water continues to work with local, state and federal leaders to provide expertise and investment in communities that need to strengthen their water systems.

Over the next 10 years, American Water plans to invest $40-$42 billion in its systems across the country to help ensure safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater service.
