LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLD WATER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LIHWAP)

American Water is committed to our communities and to keeping the water and life flowing for our customers. One way we do this is through our customer assistance programs. If you’re experiencing financial hardship, please reach out to find out more about the programs available in your state.

The Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) is a federally funded program that provides emergency assistance to families experiencing hardship with their water bills.

LIHWAP will be able to assist our customers who are behind on their drinking water and wastewater bills to help keep their water and wastewater service active.

NEW: COVID-19 Relief Funds Available March 2021

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) is managing current COVID-19 funds for utility relief for 91 counties in Tennessee.  You should contact the THDA to start an application for eligibility.  Customers may apply for past due utility expenses to cover up to 12 months and back to March 13, 2020.  These funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis so apply as soon as possible. 

Bill Payment Arrangement Plan

If you cannot pay your bill by the due date, please contact our customer service center immediately, before the due date. Our customer service representatives are available  at 1-866-736-6420.  They will work with you on a plan to pay the balance of your bill over time. 

Budget Billing

Sometimes having a predictable water bill helps with financial planning.  Budget billing is a free service available to eligible residential customers.  The program makes managing your cash flow easier by providing predictable monthly payments.

Project Water Help

Project Water Help is an emergency assistance program created by Tennessee American Water to help provide supplemental funding to Tennessee American Water customers who qualify.

Customers who are unable to pay their water bill can contact United Way’s Help Line by dialing 211. The United Way of Greater Chattanooga serves Tennessee American Water customers who reside in Hamilton, Sequatchie and Marion Counties in Tennessee as well as customers in northwest Georgia.

How You Can Help

Tennessee American Water customers who wish to contribute to the Project Water Help program can do so by adding a donation to their Tennessee American Water bill payment. Donations can be made a one-time gift or a monthly donation of $1, $3, or $5. You can be assured that 100 percent of your donation goes directly to qualifying customers.
