New Jersey American Water Raritan System addition of fluoride to the water system is temporarily suspended
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
NJAW - Raritan System is providing notification that as of December 2022, due to ongoing water treatment plant upgrades; our fluoridation system at the Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant was temporarily shut down and we have suspended feeding fluoride into the drinking water system.
What should I do?
- Children under the age of nine should use an alternative source that is rich in fluoride such as mouthwash or toothpaste. In addition, you may want to consult your dentist about other dental products containing fluoride.
- Adults and children over age nine should consult their dentist or doctor and show him/her this notice to determine if an alternate source of fluoride should be used.
- Individuals who need additional resources identifying dental care can visit https://www.state.nj.us/health/fhs/oral/documents/dental_directory.pdf to locate a dental clinic including a NJ Federally Qualified Health Centers in their county.
- If you have more questions, you can contact NJ Department of Health’s Oral Health Services Unit at oralhealth@doh.nj.gov.
What does this mean?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guidance, “water fluoridation prevents tooth decay by providing frequent and consistent contact with low levels of fluoride, ultimately reducing tooth decay by about 25% in children and adults.”
What is being done?
We anticipate completing the water treatment plant upgrades by the end of 2024. We will notify you when the fluoridation system is returned to service.
