HAWAII AMERICAN WATER ADRESSES SMALL LEAK AT EAST HONOLULU WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

Honolulu, HI (September 7, 2022) - A small and now contained leak occurred today at the East Honolulu Wastewater Treatment plant that may have allowed a small amount of fully treated but nondisinfected water into the Sandy Beach outfall, which is about a quarter mile offshore

Officials from Hawaii American Water, which owns and operates the plant, said a small gasket leak in the UV treatment process led to about 2,000 to 5,000 gallons of treated but nondisinfected water pass through to the facility’s outfall point. The plant treats about three and half a million gallons of water per day.

Hawaii American Water has since addressed the leak. Company officials believe that no adverse health impacts were posed to the public as a result of this incident.
