Illinois American Water’s Cairo District Celebrates 23 Years of Safety

Cairo, Ill. – (Sept. 8, 2022) – Illinois American Water’s Cairo District is celebrating 23 years of safety excellence. The local water system team celebrated 23 years, or 8,400 days, without experiencing any lost-time accidents on Aug. 17, 2022.

Illinois American Water employees work around the clock to deliver safe, reliable service to homes, businesses and for fire protection. They may work in confined spaces, among motorists and in extreme weather. Employees may also handle chemicals, conduct excavation and operate equipment.

Mike Brown, operations superintendent for the Cairo District, credits the local team for working safely. “Our employees remain focused every day. They perform difficult tasks and put the safety of themselves and their co-workers first. They never compromise safety for time.”

Employees are provided personal protective equipment (PPE), safety training and more to support safe work practices. Employees participate in hands-on training and online classes to support safety in the workplace. Employees connect with their local safety committee to address safety concerns and make sure everyone has the correct tools to perform their job safely. Employees also participate in job-site audits and safety talks.

Brown added, “We have an excellent safety program at Illinois American Water. The Cairo team is active in engaging safety resources and modifying to new safety standards which is apparent in their success. The team’s commitment to prevent hazards and actively engage in safe work collaborations has allowed them to celebrate 23 years of safety.”

He added that employees also participate in the Company’s Near Miss Program to help identify possible unsafe working conditions. The Near Miss reports are investigated, and corrective actions are applied and shared across the company to benefit the safety of all employees. Employees are also encouraged to become Certified Safe Workers to remain committed to safety throughout the organization.
