New Jersey American Water to Repair Leak on 42-inch Water Transmission Main

Acoustic technology identified leak; Repair to take up to 10 days with no expected impact to customers

CAMDEN, N.J. (November 9, 2020) – New Jersey American Water will be making repairs on a 42-inch water transmission main on Springdale Road, north of the intersection of Evesham Road in Cherry Hill beginning November 16, 2020. This major pipeline carries treated water to multiple towns in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem Counties.

Traffic plans and area preparations will begin November 9, and construction will begin on November 16, using two, 12-hour shifts of workers from one of the company’s local contractors, Pioneer Pipe. The company anticipates completing repairs between November 20 and 25, depending on the complexity of the job. Customers should not notice any change in their water service during the repair process. People traveling in this area are asked to drive carefully around the work zone or seek an alternate route if possible.

New Jersey American Water identified the leak through the use of acoustic leak detection technology, which was recently installed on the main to detect leaks.  This award-winning technology enabled company engineers to “hear” the water coming out of the deeply buried pipe, despite being located next to a creek.

“Investments in technology like this are very beneficial for helping us identify leaks that would otherwise go unnoticed and, that in addition to losing treated water, could become main breaks in the future, costing more money and time to fix,” said David Forcinito, Senior Director of South Operations, New Jersey American Water. “By identifying the issue, we are able to make a detailed plan for the repair, notify town officials and area residents in advance, and prepare contingencies to continue service to customers.”
