Pennsylvania American Water Expands Northeast Footprint into Wyoming County

SCRANTON, Pa. (December 17, 2020) – Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), announced today that it has acquired the water assets of the Winola Water Company.  The system serves approximately 28 customers in Overfield Township, Wyoming County.

“This system represents a challenge but also an important opportunity for our company – and a real plus for the customers who were unable to use their water for more than a year,” said Pennsylvania American Water President Mike Doran. “Pennsylvania American Water has a recognized track record in helping and making communities better by improving troubled systems and committing the technical expertise and resources needed to bring these operations into regulatory compliance.”

Pennsylvania American Water has been operating the Winola Water System under a receivership since December 2018.  As the receiver, Pennsylvania American Water has invested more than $325,000 in upgrades to the system, including installation of a new storage tank, well house improvements, and additional piping and fixtures.  Additionally, the company plans to replace pipelines in the distribution system and install meters at the customer’s properties.

As approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), the company has adopted Winola’s existing year-round water rates, and will transition customers to monthly billing.  Pennsylvania American Water’s rates and rules of service are regulated by the PUC and are posted on the company’s website.  Pennsylvania American Water provides assistance programs for customers having difficulty paying their water bill.  Information on customer assistance programs and the H2O – Help to Others program is also available on the company’s website.
