West Virginia American Water and Coalfield Development Announce $185,000 Grant from American Water Charitable Foundation
Huntington, W.Va. (Oct. 5, 2022) – The American Water Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established by American Water, the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, recently announced a $185,000 grant to Coalfield Development as part of its 2022 Water and Environment Grant Program.
“West Virginia American Water is proud to share that Coalfield Development received the second largest grant in this program provided by the American Water Charitable Foundation. With 36 grants provided across the United States, Coalfield Development stood out as a deserving and innovative organization, with an environmental project that greatly betters their community,” said Robert Burton, president, West Virginia American Water. “We truly appreciate the Foundation and their recognition of the tremendous work at Coalfield Development and across West Virginia.”
The Water and Environment grant is part of the American Water Charitable Foundation’s Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program, focusing on three pillars of giving: Water, People and Communities. Coalfield Development will utilize their $185,000 grant for construction of the West Edge Rainwater Catchment and Raingarden System.
"Coalfield Development is thrilled to receive the second largest grant from this program,” said Brandon Dennison, chief executive officer, Coalfield Development. “This funding will be a game changer towards the completion of our Rainwater Catchment and Rain Garden System here at West Edge. We are excited to get this vital community project underway as we strive to fulfill our mission and vision of helping our neighbors and our planet."
"Coalfield Development is excited to work with the American Water Charitable Foundation to build out our vision for an integrated rainwater catchment and bioswale diversion system at our West Edge social enterprise incubator in Huntington,” continued Jacob Hannah, development director for Coalfield Development. “This system will have the capability to divert thousands of gallons of stormwater away from the city's infrastructure and watersheds as a preventative flooding and pollution measure, while also providing our organization with stored rainwater for maintenance and utility purposes in our building. The installation will also have an overflow system that will divert excess rainwater into a rain garden that will slowly and safely dissipate the water into the ground's natural water table. Coalfield Development will leverage this installation as a training and education hub for our workforce development program, as well as for the general public of the Huntington area."
Coalfield Development will begin construction on the system in early 2023 with anticipated completion in 2024. The project was one of five selected in West Virginia for funding from the American Water Charitable Foundation, totaling $296,000.
